Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's 2011-12 season brings 'Streetcar' premiere

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Fresh takes on familiar stories and returning popular repertoire will animate the five productions of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's 2011-12 season.
The company, which has enjoyed four consecutive years of balanced budgets, plans to add four or five performances to the run of its production of 'The Nutcracker,' set in Pittsburgh by artistic director Terrence S. Orr.

"A Streetcar Named Desire" sounds like a rather exciting piece for any ballet repertoire, especially Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Tennessee Williams works are, especially "Streetcar" are heavily bathed in emotion and dramatic action. The script would lend itself beautifully to the exaggerated movement of storytelling with dance and there is enough action to keep the interest of the audience. It may also attract some atypical audiences because it's a story most people know. I firmly believe that a ballet should have at least one other commercial piece (besides nutcracker) to attract more people to come out and try ballet. For example, "Swan Lake," "Dracula," or "Romeo and Juliet" often encourage different audience types to come out. "Peter Pan" and "Streetcar" are those types of shows but what's exciting about them is that they are fresh and the public is not immune to them, at least in the ballet world.
