Irene Lewis leaves Center Stage with the same edge that defined her career

Washington Post: "One way to measure Center Stage's departing artistic director, Irene Lewis, is by the way she gauges audience response to her current - and final - show there, Harold Pinter's 'The Homecoming,' a tough drama that leaves audiences arguing with each other on the way out.

I'm always leery of local companies that does rely on local talent; or of Artistic Directors who don't live in the city their theatre resides in and relies on. To me, it always smacked of, "I want to be in New York, but since I'm not big/good/connected enough to ACTUALLY work in New York [this city] will have to do."

But Irene Lewis must have been doing SOMETHING right, as Center Stage has been around for decades and is STILL around; which, given the market for something so "frivolous" as theatre, is quite a feat.
