The Indienomics of Casting

Backstage: "When SAGIndie was born in 1997, only about 23 percent of movies at the Sundance Film Festival were produced under the Screen Actors Guild's low-budget agreements. In 2011, that number was close to 97 percent. SAGIndie national director Darrien Michele Gipson is proud of that statistic, and it's easy to understand why. It's a good indicator of how well she's doing her job.

To start from nothing and end up with something is quite impressive. I can imagine as a first time film maker or just a film maker with a very low budget it would be hard to make good decisions about how to do things effectively and also economically. I'm sure that to have SAG on their side has been a major life saver, also very informative. I think small budget films just like small budget theater are very important to the industry because they push the direction of the art and they can change how things are done because they are allowed to take risks. I think also with YouTube and the internet in general there are new "film makers" all the time and the more information there is out there to teach them how to do things the better.
