I hope they're televising this, because it sounds fantastic. I have a sneaking suspicion I've talked about Sondheim on this blog before, but he is seriously the Beethoven of Broadway composers in my opinion. He's written some of the most incredible work. That's not to say that my knowledge in that particular area is overflowing, but I'm a huge fan nonetheless. You can always tell a Sondheim musical when you hear it, and they've always touched me in a very particular and unique way. Broadway musicals aren't known for their content, they're typically known for show. Here and there you find one with really beautiful lyrics, or a really powerful message like Next to Normal, but every Sondheim musical is powered with various themes, and just really touches you as a person. That's my experience at least. This past weekend I saw Sweeney Todd at my high school, and I forgot just how intense and intricate his music is. His shows truly stand out. Happy b-day Sondheim.
