Southern California's big theaters need fresh, dramatic thinking

latimes.com: "Southern California is famous for being ahead of the national curve -- in styles, fads and unenviable crises. And right now, the region's largest institutional theaters are serving as a crystal ball for leadership concerns affecting nonprofit theaters throughout the country."

It's interesting to hear an opinion about an aspect of Southern California being behind the times. When one thinks about this area, you consider it a hub for the latest trends in the arts and fashion industries. USC is also one of the hotspots for undergraduate theatrical training. To hear that the works and seasons currently produced in Southern California are a little behind the times is interesting. What is deciding what is fresh? Does the theater on the East Coast determine where theater is going? Where do we get that common thread?
