'Japanese Jazz Opera' spectacularly odd

PRI.ORG: "A video making the rounds online features actors dressed up as peasants singing American jazz standards with Japanese lyrics."

woah. This is sorta odd. Im familiar with the story of the peach boy, and I have a Christmas tree ornament with him on it. I think its a typical pretty folk tale that's kinda whimsical and fun. I think I would find the video funnier if i knew what they were saying. I cant yet tell if they are keeping the original lyrics or changing them. The boy popping out of the peach is pretty hilarious.

That's why I am saying... to PRI, please do not take this kind of trifling Japanese TV show seriously, even if you might be making fun of the culture. Truly, there were lot of comedians who became popular and created plenty of TV shows, which are now categorized as a "Variety show".

Alana, they are just reading the original text from its fairly tale. I do not know why they came up with this idea, because it is not funny. Just weird.

I don't even know if people really enjoyed this show in those days. It is bad habit of certain TV productions in Japan that they do such things as low-quality programs without serious thoughts.

I grew up seeing this comedian on TV, but I did not know about this show anyway...

I definitely think Japan has this reputation of only showing really odd, weird tv shows that are often what we would describe as just corny and pretty stupid. We're used to this because of course all we see in America is ridiculous internet clips from poorly made Japanese shows. Let's face it, we've got some pretty terrible shows just like here as well and really don't want them to represent our overall culture. I myself really love alot of Japanese entertainment, and it's really not like this at all. Though i'd have to say Hide is definitely the best source for this one.
