Email Overload - Reducing Electronic Overload
Productivity501: "Email is one of those things that can be both a great time-saver and a huge waste of time. The idea of being able to send a message to someone across the country and get a reply back in hours or even minutes is amazing, even though we take it for granted. Unfortunately, email has become a victim of its own success, and it is easy to drown in the huge volume of electronic messages that come in each day."

This article offers great tips. Yes, I am doing the same thing; using different email addresses for specific purpose. Actually, tougher part is to keep them organized. Once those are mixed together, it is going to loose the purpose instantly and much harder to handle them....
Regarding the dependance on email, from my experience in working for corporation, do not estimate that the receiver of the email is always in front of PC, day and night. Sometimes we tend to feel that just sending emails is part of work. It is just a communication tool.
