Looks like a projection surface to me.
Cool idea, but this isn't all that creative. It's done all the time with theatre scenery. One of the playground installations this past week did this on a model box.
It's very cleanly made, and im sure there was some figuring out of depth of field stuff for the non-flat surfaces. Still, not all that difficult with the right computer software.
