It's really nice to hear about more not-for-profit software in specialized fields like ours. As much as vectorworks is a complicated and gigantic program that might not be a good candidate for the FOSS model, the very small subset of it that most theatre folks use is not unreasonably complicated. Unfortunately, this is not FOSS, but not-for profit is a good start. I'm still awaiting the day when lightwrite is replaced with something open, and if it takes a few more years, maybe it'll be a mission for me to start.
I completely agree with Ethan. I think the development of software like this has the ability to expand our industry to those who may not have the means to get some of the more expensive programs. It also encourages more people to try out their interests in the industry pain free. I definitely plan to play around with this software before I decide to pay hundreds of dollars for anything else.
Hmmmm...I'll try it! I mean, I think its great that people are actually interested in creating free or open source products for our industry. Given how small it is, there isn't a lot of pull from the programming and software industry at large to create entertainment specific software. Its really just the few people in our industry with open hearts and programming experience that have been able to make specific software for us -- ie. LightWright. I'll give it a go, but I doubt this piece of software is going to be able to rival the power and support that VW has behind it.
