Athol Fugard’s Next Act

NYTimes.com: "Athol Fugard, the renowned South African playwright, paced at the edge of a plywood stage, rubbing his head and listening intensely to two actors run through their lines. Rehearsals for his new play, “The Train Driver,” had begun."

I'm still new to this idea of advocating ideals and incorporating current issues into theatre, which I'm aware isn't a new concept, but I seem to be hearing about it more and more and looking at it in a new light. I think this play in particular sounds worthwhile because the history it refers to is more current, but more so for my parent's generation and before. I don't know as much about South Africa as I should, and I'm well aware of this. It's a portion of history that was never written into the textbooks I read, and I think reviving the struggle of South Africans in the form of a play is an interesting method of maintaining awareness among society, youth especially.

'will be sitting in the lap of a ghost'

Everytime he is quoted, its all beautiful poetry. Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and Master Harold and the Boys are two of my favortie works by him, so no doubt this next production has high expectations. I heard somewhere that he is teaching Playwrighting to students at UC San Diego. What an interesting person to have you teach about directing and writing. I wonder if John Kani is involved with this.
