‘Dirty Dancing: The Musical’ is coming to Broadway

www.broadwaynews.com: “Dirty Dancing: The Musical” comes to Broadway this winter in celebration of the beloved movie’s 40th anniversary. The musical will play the Lena Horne Theatre for a limited engagement from February 12 through September 5, 2027, before resuming its North American tour.

I just recently learned that "Dirty Dancing” was launching a North American Tour a few months ago via social media, and despite only seeing the movie once, I think that I have only seen this movie once. I looked at the casting, and from this article, I have learned that one of my friend’s older sisters is in this show, and it will be her Broadway debut. I also follow the scenic designer on social media, Brett J. Banakis, and his 3D model for the North American Tour, and it looks fantastic. I also have not heard of any of these performers who are leading the show and making up the ensemble, so I'm super thrilled that other artists are getting opportunities to perform on a Broadway stage and in a touring show like this one. This is a show that I definitely hope to see for its limited engagement on Broadway, after a rewatch of the classic movie.

Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite movies of all time, and while having an issue with it being made into a musical in the first place, overall I am very happy that they will get a broadway run. Tours are often a way for young artists to break into the industry, with many established people not wanting to uproot themselves, this means that a considerable number of people in the cast will be making their broadway debut during this run, which i think is such a fantastic thing. I think the set is unique and the costumes are fantastic. I wonder what the songs sound like and how true to the original choreography they are. Given the opportunity I would love to see the show when it comes to Broadway, maybe during a school break, and hopefully I will like it.

How exciting!! I didn’t see this movie until I was 17 but it did not disappoint. I knew it was a classic, coming of age movie. And it was exactly that for me. It has a feeling of untamed young rebellion I haven’t seen represented quite the way I feel it in any other media, new or old. I think a Dirty Dancing musical is a wonderful idea. I can only hope that it will land the lift better than back to the future did. Despite its spectacular tech effects, I heard that one was mid in every other category: music, story, dance. I’m really curious about what the set is going to look like. I feel the setting of a summer camp in a forest is really integral to the atmosphere of the show. I’m curious how they’ll replicate that onstage. Whatever happensI’m sure the music is going to be fantastic.

It is very exciting to see such a classic movie and musical come back to Broadway. I think bringing back these iconic musicals to broadway is in a way an attempt at trying to revive the popularity theatre once had. I have read past articles and see it in social media that theatre and the arts in general continue to lose traction due to AI and the film world. Many musicals have started to be recorded and spread to the public through video. The recordings spark a bit more popularity in shows and make them more accessible to audiences who can not afford to see the shows in person. To bring back “Dirty Dancing” will definitely spark traction with an older generation and hopefully the younger generations are cultured enough to want to see the iconic musical that is “Dirty Dancing”. Hamilton sparked a huge revival of theatre but there has not been such a booming show since then.

I am still unsure about all of the movie to musical adaptations that have been made recently, but I am quite happy that Dirty Dancing is seemingly being done right. Lonny Price’s involvement gives me peace of mind, as he has seen every iteration of the original script and will make sure to adapt it with care. I am really excited that Baby and Johnny’s actors (Annalese Starzec and Blake Zekesnikar) are both making their Broadway debuts, and I really hope that this project manages to skyrocket their careers. I hope that the stage production is able to replicate that nostalgic, dreamy, pure feeling I get when watching the film, and I cannot wait to watch these incredibly talented actors dance their hearts out. I wonder how the short hiatus for Broadway will affect the rest of the run, and whether Dirty Dancing will land a more permanent spot on Broadway after the tour ends. I have to admit, the pictures I’ve seen look pretty spot on to the film, and I’m excited to see my favorite scenes translate live.

I watched Dirty Dancing for the first time very recently, and I really loved it. That being said, it has potential, but I worry about the heart of the story remaining due to the current trend of movie to musical adaptations . It is reassuring, however, to hear that some of the same individuals that worked on the movie are also involved in the production of the musical. I probably will not get the chance to see it, but I hope they find an appropriate balance of keeping the same energy that keeps the original film so iconic, while not making a carbon copy of the movie. It’s also exciting to see new talent get the chance to be on Broadway, which seems to become less and less common. I also hope that the production was not rushed in order to make the 40th anniversary deadline. I so truly hope that the production is successful and brings the story of Dirty Dancing to new audiences.

My initial feeling concerning this show was for sure interesting as Dirty Dancing holds a very unique beloved status in people's memories, meaning this staged adaptation needs to do a lot to meet those requirements. One of the main reasons for the success of the movie lies in its genuine physicality and chemistry demonstrated by two actors that played leading roles and turning this success into something on stage means making the right decision regarding how to manage to express that energy without just making the same scenes over again. I am not the biggest fan of jukebox adaptations as I just never feel like they follow a through line, and lack substance however depending on whether they trust their own movement or prefer to rely on recollection of previous performances, only time will tell. I hope this performance will rely on that aspect rather than just present the scenes expected by fans.

I’ve loved Dirty Dancing since my mom showed it to my sister and me when we were younger. The movie is entertaining to watch in its dancing and drama but holds real issues and consequences that were incredible to be shown at the time and even now. I think it is interesting that they are bringing it to the stage now when there has been a growing struggle with costs and making new productions for Broadway. I hope that they do the movie justice and do not smooth over the main issue in the movie for a wider audience. I think that this musical being brought up now has a lot to say about our current politics, and I worry about how they may change the plot or be in danger of possibly being shut down. I would love to see this performance and listen to the music when it comes out.

I really liked this article! I (and the rest of the DP ‘30 class) just watched the original movie version of Dirty Dancing recently, and I really liked it. A lot of people consider it to be a must-watch movie, especially within the realm of dramas or romance movies, and it’s really exciting to hear that it’s moving from the screen to the stage. I especially think it’s interesting because it’s already such a dramatic, campy movie, and has a strong focus on dancing and singing already; I think it will be really cool to see how that translates to a staged production. Also, I think it would be awesome to see the famous lift performed live (assuming the stage production keeps the choreography the same), and I can imagine that a lot of Dirty Dancing fans will be flocking to the theatres for the same reason!
