I thought this was happening in New York at first, and I was very confused. I really wish Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club had had a longer run on Broadway, but I’m still very happy that it’s been so successful in the West End. It makes me wonder about what shows we want here in the US versus what’s appreciated abroad. Alas, that’s a question for another day. A pre-theatre meal is not uncommon. I think of the Prado in Balboa Park a short walk from the Old Globe. It was a favorite stop with my family and friends before a show (or sometimes a treat for myself before I worked an ushering shift). The staff was always so lovely and their strawberry walnut salad was to die for. Part of what made them so great was their quick service and time management for folks headed to the theater. They’d ask you when they sat you if you were seeing a show tonight and what time. The wait staff would be familiar with all of the shows happening at the time and most of the time had seen it themselves, and would be able to give you their thoughts. I think this concept fits perfectly into the world of Cabaret the club although, deploying my Dramaturgical sensibilities I don’t see completely how it fits into the end of the show.

I really wish things like this were in the states more. I absolutely loved this production of Cabaret (I saw it twice, once on Broadway and once on the West End) and I cannot express how much I want to experience it again. And this concept is so cool, it reminds me of the pre-show that the performances had so I wonder if thats the direction that they’re going with for this. The fact that old cast members are said to come and perform as well is also very exciting for those who might’ve missed some people–I would die to hear Adam Lambert’s I Don’t Care Much or Hannah Dodd’s Maybe this time again. This also seems like smart marketing for both parties. Cabaret fans will flock to this restaurant (especially considering that it’s a limited run) and it will likely make fans go back to see the show again. I hope that production photos or videos come out of this. I'd really like to see the creative elements as well as the new stuff that they would be performing.
