I love OK Go, my partner does too, their work is always so lovely. This video is a partnership with Blender which this article doesn’t seem to mention. The use of the robots is so ironic given the topic of this song; love and human connection. This band uses music videos to create not only amazing music but also amazing performance. This entire music video was all in one cut. Sure their work isn’t live, but this is an incredible carefully put together video nonetheless. I’m always amazed by the amount of effort into their videos since the way it’s put together, clearly requires the programming of robots, rehearsal of performers and technicians to work out all of the mirror and camera angles, not to mention that they’re a music group so prior to this went through all of the effort to write and produce a song.
The music video that OK Go made here is incredible. The single shot that comprises the entirety of the video is vibrant and innovative in a way I haven’t seen in music videos before and of a quality I rarely see even in big budget prestige films. I usually don’t care for music videos but this is certainly an exception. The fact that the band had to develop proprietary software to make all of the cobots work in the video is incredible and the way the function is pretty visionary. The movement of the robots with the mirrors makes an interesting statement about how what we make is a reflection of ourselves is very interesting, and the use of light in conjunction with these elements made for a rather psychedelic experience. I wonder if this technology could be used in live entertainment and events and how it could be worked into live shows or if the machines and software are too temperamental to exist outside of a highly choreographed video. I would really like to see where this goes and its projects like these that make me excited for the future of entertainment, live and prerecorded.
