www.forbes.com: This past Sunday was a night to remember, as the entertainment industry and the world at large celebrated the outstanding achievements of creative individuals within a wide array of skill sets at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Yet beyond the star-studded red carpet where the Fiji Water was flowing, to the elaborate live telecast hosted by Nate Bargatze and the glitzy gala & after parties that followed, these Hollywood professionals see the power & purpose within their work today.

While I do agree that especially in times of hardship and uncertainty there’s a certain importance for creative work, I feel that its emphasis should not be on escapism. Okay sure, I understand the need, but if our only real emphasis on current art is escapism then we are intentionally driving people away from real things happening in the world that require attention. Hot take but I think we (Americans) aren’t sensitive enough to what’s happening in the world. Oh my, I’ve read too many news articles about people struggling today and now I’m sad and I want to go watch a new movie ignoring all of the current systemic flaws in our society! Is there not more inclination to do something progressive? To speak out? But we all sit and type on our little machines just like this, about all our real opinions, while there’s a world to save.
These statements are all from people in a place of privilege, who can afford to pursue their dreams of working in entertainment and afford to live comfortably enough to think this way. Of course they’re advocating for entertainment as a form of escapism! That’s so much easier than fighting the fight. I’m trying not to get too political. This current trend of prioritising “escapism” is choosing to be ignorant to what’s going on, from a place of privilege, when we could instead be using art to create further empathy. We should be using art to come together and understand each other, not to distract.
