This initiative uses a lot of buzz words that I have seen in similar theater initiatives. I wonder if these are common phrases in the theater world at large, or maybe they are newer phrases which signify the shifting focus towards newer written plays. The term New Works is seen in Carnegie Mellon University’s new program literally called New Works. It seems that this program focuses on just that: new works with new artists. I also recently learned of an older program from Quantum Theatre called InQbator. This idea was a collaboration between Pittsburgh playwrights and theater makers to diversify Quantum Theatre’s seasons. I wonder if this is an older phrase, as it seems to be a take on the word incubator, rewritten to include a Q to remind of the Quantum Theatre. Combining these phrases in Terrence McNally New Works Incubator reminds the audience of innovative and inspiring programs which have changed how we approach theater.
