Universal Reveals a Trailer for Its Behind the Scenes Theme Park Docuseries
gizmodo.com: Disney gets all the press, and Six Flags has all the dancing commercials, but Universal has always had a strong position in the theme park world. Starting with a simple tour of the Universal lot in Hollywood, the film studio evolved that into several parks across the globe, all of which showcase the big, popular film and TV shows created by the studio. Then, last year, that culminated with Universal opening its most advanced park yet, Epic Universe in Orlando.

As someone who has been too universal three times and has gotten that chance to experience the epic universe, I will definitely be giving this a watch. I never really thought much about the history of the parks and about how they came to be. I think it is more compelling and talked about with Disney because even though it is a studio and a company like Universal, it is named after the one and only Walt Disney. I think because it was named after him and because of the popularity of the company that they have more documentaries and series about Disney's history. Universal is seen more as a company and doesn't specify a specific person, but multiple different movies or worlds. I think having that history and being able to see Epic Universe being created will allow a new side of Universal for me personally. I also think it is a good investment and a good time to be releasing it, especially with the recent opening of Epic Universe.
I would not consider myself a big theme park person, however, this docuseries is fascinating. Granted, I think I am interested in it simply because I work in the entertainment industry but I think that it can be appealing to even people that don’t work in the industry. There are millions of people that are widely invested in theme parks and these movies and if less than a quarter of those people took the time out of their day to watch this docuseries, I think it could have a very positive impact on our industry as a whole. Most of the time the creatives and crew behind all of these universes and immersive theatrical events go unappreciated. This docuseries highlights all of those people and shows the general public how hard working and creative we actually are. I hope that this series opens up a new conversation about how other theatrical and entertainment behind the scenes workers, function while creating the magic that the audience takes in.
This docuseries actually is really interesting to me and I can’t wait till it comes out. I don’t watch too many documentaries, but I do like to listen to them in the background every now and then while I work. While I would usually listen to documentaries more about controversy, true crime, and/or animals, this one actually really peaks my interest! Epic Universe seems incredible, and I’ve really been wanting to go, but haven’t been able to find the time (or the money). All the rides, attractions, decorations, etc clearly have so much work put into them and incredibly talented people worked on it. I want to know how it all came to be and how they put it all together. Since I can’t be there in person to theorize about how they did it, I honestly just want to try and live vicariously through the docuseries. I’m also just curious about what else they might discuss. Universal is honestly such a cool theme park and I have very fond memories of it. I can’t wait to learn more about it!
I am very excited for this docuseries. I have not been to Epic Universe in person yet, but in November I will go with the CMU team to the TMU Thrill Design Competition that’s held at Universal. I love theme parks for their design and strict adherence to maintaining a themed environment and learning the ways in which they achieve different effects and fake worlds. I love behind the scenes content in general, but with Epic Universe being the biggest center of theme park news its cool they’re releasing this information soon after its existence. I think this docuseries will also help in my current endeavors in Scenic Packet class as I am designing a dark ride to the 1939 Paramount Picture’s animated Gulliver’s Travels. Currently I am using my knowledge from Disneyland dark rides to produce content for it but more modern technological influences would also be relevant and cool.
And a release date as well I believe, September 29? I’ve been waiting for this for a while now, given that it was supposed to be released in July, and has since been pushed back. I was fortunate enough to experience Epic Universe during its opening month, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Prior to Epic’s opening, I had felt that Disney was very clearly ahead of Universal when it came to creating immersive experiences, though Universal did have an edge on thrills. Now, that race is closer than ever before, as Epic is very very very close to Disney’s level. The theming within the lands was excellent, though there were many sightline issues and not nearly enough shade. Battle at the Ministry, however, is a dark ride to rival Disney’s crown jewel, Rise of the Resistance. Suffice to say, I am excited to see how they pulled it off.
I love Epic Universe! And as a Floridian, I have so many thoughts. I also LOVE each of the franchises that they picked. I feel like everyone has wanted at some point in their life to jump into the world of a video game or movie, and the fact that they made it happen is incredible. I want to jump on blocks with Mario and ride dragons. Like I LOVE the “How to Train a Dragon” Franchise, so this world is incredibly exciting to me. I haven’t been able to go yet, but I know some people who work there, and they all say that it is incredible. I also love that Universal is taking after Disney to create these behind the scenes documentaries because it is not only cool for people who love this industry, but also for the general population to get a peek behind the doors into our world.
