Instrumental Theatre Company Stages Chekhov at a Lakefront Edgewater Mansion
www.newcitystage.com: Writing about the nature of ancient Greek theater, Nietzsche dropped this bombshell: “The chorus is a living bulwark against the onsets of reality, because it portrays existence more truthfully, more realistically, more perfectly than the cultured man who ordinarily considers himself as the only reality.” People knew that the actors were actors, men parroting words from a script, but the chorus, a group of performers who sang, danced and provided commentary on the play’s action, made the actors’ performances more believable.

This is mansion is a fantastic backdrop for Chekhov’s “The Seagull.” Theater done in non-traditional spaces has a way of becoming more intimate, more accessible in some ways, more detailed, and more complicated. Moving an audience through the story as they most often move with the action presents its own set of challenges and can make it inaccessible to people with mobility issues, so I would be intrigued to see if they’ve had to navigate this or if the mansion doesn’t present that kind of challenge. The cost of the tickets alone makes this more accessible as it’s often seen that ticket prices are a common deterrent for people who want to see theater. The use of music to fill where words fail isn’t a new concept, but it gives this piece more dimension as productions run the spectrum of letting the actors fall into silence or filling the space with music. Seeing the music provided by the characters instead of by an offstage band or sound cue adds that extra little layer.
