I’ve never watched the Emmys, or the Oscars, or any of the other popular award shows on TV. It's always been a little strange to me. While I’m glad there are structures in place to recognize artists’ work, I’m aware that many of these shows have issues with diversity, and the nomination or voting processes. I also think that award shows are getting smaller and less significant since the rise of social media. It feels like every minor influencer is being invited to large events just to cushion the actors and singers. I also think many of these events used to embody a monoculture- disseminated through a few main magazines or radio shows that preached the same singers and actors and shows. Now with social media, its hard to tell what pop culture is shared.
This article was pretty self aware. Each picture is littered with brand names and popular products- skincare, Stanley knockoffs (Hydrojug??) and leather bags. The journalist writes the event has “celebrity indulgence.” The writer tries to redeem the event by showing how charitable it was. I’m glad that it helps others through the “Television Academy Foundation Educational Programs.” I do think they could cut back on the advertisements, especially as award shows continue to go out of fashion.
