Fyre Festival Musical In Development With Taika Waititi and Rita Ora
www.hollywoodreporter.com: The show, Fyre Fest The Musical, is a musical comedy based on the life story of Billy McFarland, the founder of the Fyre Festival. The event, which was billed as a luxury music festival in the Bahamas, ended up being canceled last minute, leaving influencers and celebrities stranded. McFarland pleaded guilty to fraud in 2018 and spent several years in federal prison.

I believe I have heard of the Fyre Festival, although I am not sure of specifics. The interesting part of this musical, for me, is the comedy aspect. I love a biography of life which also entices the viewers with comedy. From one of the writers, Taika Waititi, I am sure this musical will be packed full of comedy. This interview also reflects why Waititi is such a good fit as a writer for this musical, because he could barely get through one sentence without cracking a joke. I am hoping for more information in the future about both how the musical is coming along and when it might premiere. I have never really considered how writing goes for comedy. In my mind it seems to be something that your brain just creates, but there must be some discipline behind it. I have also heard that different writers have different methods to prompt idea making.
I don’t really know what the Fyre Festival is, I have a vague sense of remembering seeing a bunch of youtube video essays a few years ago about it and probably watched a few of them. I remember it being some kind of rave/festival thing like Burning Man and Coachella. This headline definitely caught my attention as I never anticipated seeing all of those different people/things in one sentence. I think this musical could be interesting if it is kind of spoof-like in the same vein as The Producers and it would be interesting to have more of a pop soundtrack with someone like Rita Ora since it had to do with contemporary music and influencers that were there. Taika Waititi is also an inspired choice as he makes some really good work but I feel like it is always super crazy and I don’t know if either of them have done any theater or musicals before. I don’t know how successful this will be but it seems like something that could be a weird cult classic.
