All-new ‘Funhouse at Pacific Park’ to open at the Santa Monica Pier, will celebrate eerie historic past

Amusement Today: The legendary “Toonerville Funhouse” appeared in two eras of Santa Monica amusement history – first at Ocean Park Pier in the 1920s and later at Pacific Ocean Park in 1958 – thrilling and unnerving guests for decades. Hidden away for years, its spirit has been resurrected inside Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier.

This Funhouse at Pacific Park looks so fun to go to, and I love that they are intentionally drawing on other funhouses and expanding upon their ideas. Especially with the ability to take this old funhouse which had not seen guests, there is this connection to the past that has now been uncovered. Although I can appreciate the take that this reference to history makes the funhouse eerie, I think it seems more sentimental than anything. It is also taking an unused building and repurposing it, avoiding the cost and material use of creating an entirely new building. In the modern world where we need to be increasingly aware of the materials and land that we are taking up, repurposing older buildings is a great idea. Also, the experience of being able to visit or work in such a renowned funhouse in so many peoples’ memories is such an exciting opportunity.
