With Wildfires Contained, Hollywood Workers Try to Rebuild

www.thewrap.com: On Jan. 16, it was all hands on deck at the IATSE Local 80 headquarters in Burbank, and not just within the entertainment crew workers’ union. Representatives from the Motion Picture & Television Fund and Entertainment Community Fund were on hand to accept applications for financial assistance. Grief counselors and insurance advisors were available for meetings on the second floor.

The attention span of the media, and of the American public, is unfortunately too short. I feel as if coverage of the Los Angeles fires suddenly disappeared from the news, even though the fires were clearly not put out yet. In fact, I remember reading about a new fire that had just cropped up.

It was comforting and heartwarming to read in this article that costumes from shows were being donated by IATSE, and that they are still involved in the rebuilding efforts even though the immediate needs of food and clothing have been taken care of. Too often it seems that support from organizations tapers off as a specific crisis’ response seems to fall in priority, or the support is from a limited event, such as the fireaid concert or the advertising for donations at the Grammys's. I'm glad that the community and the people on the ground are staying focused and not going anywhere, I just wish the rest of the country wouldn't forget so quickly.
