Spying on the appropriation of the ‘real’ James Bond with City Theatre
Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents: While I am no James Bond fan, I do appreciate his legacy in contemporary culture so the title caught my attention. Turns out Porfirio Rubirosa, a Dominican diplomat, race car driver, soldier and polo player who’s believed to be the inspiration for the famous character ‘James Bond’.

Okay actually really wanted to see this show because some CMU directors were working on it so I've seen it all over like social media stories and Instagram and posts and all that. This is called the real James Bond or something like that so when I first heard it I thought they were talking about James Bond the movie and I was like oh like that's interesting like seeing you people working on James Bond so it threw me off for a minute to say but once I figured out it was staged I really wanted to see it because we go to school in the city and there is there's a lot of great art so I was just very intrigued especially the name it just drew me in there were a couple kids who I know we're going to see it and I really want to join them but unfortunately I had other plans but I congratulate them on the run and hope maybe I can see it another time shortly.
I’m not sure that I agree with this article…. The article criticizes the creatives of the Real James Bond for glossing over the character's abuse of women. When creating a biographical musical or play you need to be intentional about what items to focus on. And in this story the creators focused on his identity as a Dominican man. That’s certainly not to say abuse should be ignored or seen through rose colored. Rather theater artists need to decide what story they’re telling and focus on the details that will best tell that story. There are countless other shows that focus on a character’s abusive behavior, or choose to focus on something else. The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical decided to focus on his darker moments of alcohol and drug abuse and his difficult relationship with his wife. On the other hand the Greatest Showman almost idolizes P.T.Barnum almost entirely overlooking his flaws.
