Paul Tazewell on his Wicked Oscar nomination and ‘touching hearts’
GoldDerby: When this year’s Oscar nominations were announced, Wicked costume designer Paul Tazewell was defying gravity thousands of feet in the air.
“I was actually on a plane coming from London, and I couldn’t get my wi-fi to work,” the Best Costume Design nominee tells Gold Derby (watch above). “I finally just gave up, and I dozed off for a bit. When I woke up, I was able to get on the wi-fi, and I saw all of the texts that had come through. I was so pleased!”

Once again, I am making another news comment about Wicked in the movie. I think that Paul Tazewell is just this insane designer, not only is he this incredible designer with a brilliant mind, but he is also a humble person and has such a big impact on the design world and on young designers who are still trying to get their foot in this industry I mean I'm not a costume designer but seeing how this person works and how we incorporate nature and Beauty into his costume designs for these large-scale Productions in movies is just very Inspiring. I mean, this designer and his team created over 1,500 different costume looks for all the munchkins and The Ensemble and Elphaba and Glinda, And I'm just taking a bath by his talent and his design style I mean, you can so clearly see his design Styles consistency throughout this piece and throughout different shows I mean he is such a heavy user of nature in his designs using the Fibonacci spiral and mushrooms to create is just so cool and so unique and so brilliant.
Not only is this movie iconic because of its legacy from the musical that’s been on Broadway for so many years, but the production aspects of this movie went above and beyond. I think most people‘s expectations, and I think it just perfectly captured how amazing this show is on Broadway and how incredible the impact has been for so many years. I believe that Paul Tazewell is a fantastic designer, and his work has been not only the perfect amount of dramatic, capturing all of each character's aspects and the world of Oz and the Emerald City. The man himself is an extremely humble and talented person who just loves to do the work. You can tell that by how he designed just by the fact that he created over 1500 different costumes for all of the people of the Emerald City you can tell how much effort it took to make all of the costumes and the world of Oz bringing it together.
