Little Shop of Horrors Crew Secures First Union Contract

IATSE: The production team behind the off-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors has made history by securing their first union contract with the backing of The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). The crew joins their counterparts from the musical Titanique in becoming the second of the newly organized off-Broadway groups (Atlantic Theater, Titanique, Public Theater) to ratify an agreement since workers launched their organizing efforts in spring of 2024.

I understand that Little Shop of Horrors is not a Broadway show but it is a pretty big show that is associated with Broadway so I'm very surprised that they are finally getting a Union contract for their cast and crew. but nonetheless, I think this is really really great and a step in the right direction. As I was reading this article I noticed the photos of what looks like to be the stage management team which had like A handful of stage managers like seven or eight so the fact that so many managers have worked for the show without a Union contract or you know without a guaranteed Union contract is Crazy. I just think that as young artists, designers, managers, and technicians going into this field or similar fields, it's a great step in the right direction for these places to get Union contracts. I feel like for a lot of people in this field they're not doing it for money they're doing it because they love it so the least they can get is a secure contract to guarantee their basic rights and needs.

I am so happy for all of the cast and crew members of Little Shop of Horrors that they are now part of a union contract. I get that it's still not technically a broadway show, it's still a major off broadway production and this is really exciting news for everyone involved. With all the discussions of unionizing lately and issues with some people being on strike and ugly negotiations wins like this are something we should celebrate! I wish that having a union contract was the standard in the industry as it only really helps the workplace standards for the cast and crew of the production. This isn’t really an industry people enter for the money, they enter it for the passion and it's unfortunate that we have to fight so hard in order to get better working conditions when in so many other industries good workplace conditions are just a given.
