Curtain up! Meet the new artistic directors with great plans for British theatre

Theatre | The Guardian: It happens every few years. An artistic director leaves a theatre; another steps up or down or sideways to take the position; a third follows. Within months a sweeping change has occurred and the theatrical landscape looks entirely different.

As I’m getting more and more familiar with what Artistic Directors do, I’m growing more and more intrigued. Are they like the CEOs of a theater? Or an equivalent? Or perhaps a close second? I wonder how it works at different levels of theaters. Do ADs get complete decisions in show approval? Do they need board approval or a committee? Is it a mix of management and creativity? Or simply the management of the creative? If one person, hypothetically, has an interest in directing and management could this be a spot for them? Or is it drier than it sounds? How much does an Artistic Director really influence the culture of a theater company? How much community outreach and positive impact can they create?
