With the abrupt and outrageous changes happening in the government after the transition to the new presidential administration, I have been paying close attention to the news. The changes that the administration is making will irreversibly harm our country, our people, and directly impact our campus community. There were some things that have happened that were unsurprising, however the takeover of the Kennedy Center and the subsequent cancellations were shocking to me. This was mainly because I did not know much about the Kennedy Center before this news broke. However, the move made logical sense; theatrical performances are an artistic form of free speech and expression, and an arena for creative exploration, community, and inclusion. The current administration obviously feels threatened by such an institution. What is especially outrageous about the forced cancellation of Finn is the level of censorship they went to. The federal government should have more important and pressing things to worry about than a children’s musical that is not harming anyone.
