PLAYBILLDER Spotlight: In The Neverland Project, Students Get to Create Something Truly Original

Playbill: This week's spotlight is Olathe South High School of Olathe, Kansas, and their production of The Neverland Project. The play, written for the school by Stephen Gregg, tells the "real story" of Peter Pan from Wendy Moira Angela Darling's perspective. Revealing what really happened to Peter's shadow, just how mean Tinker Bell could be, and which character didn't make the cut in J. M. Barrie's original story. The play-within-a-play is a celebration of imagination and how to keep it alive.

Olathe South High School’s production of The Neverland Project seemed like such a rewarding process for everyone involved. The set looks incredible, with its bright colors and asymmetry. Before reading this article, I never knew about the work Playbill does to shine the light on educational/regional theatres. I think that it’s so important for big companies and organizations to promote others. This interview with David Tate was uplifting to read. It’s really relieving to hear a theatre educator applaud students who aren’t pursuing theatre post-graduation. I love when he says that “students get to work together to find success in creating something bigger than themselves.” I’ve never really viewed production as something bigger than myself, but I guess it really is. I think being industry, the magic that we create for audiences can oftentimes be underappreciated by us, and I’ve realized it’s important to step back and view work from an outside perspective.
