In First Ever Collab Meow Wolf Welcomes Vegas City Opera To Its Worlds

Live Design Online: "It's her! My juicy juice! My orange crush! My main squeeze!” exclaims The Prince. His words will echo throughout “Where Reality Checks Out” this November. The Love of Three Oranges, a fairytale opera about a prince who is cursed and must find three oranges, each containing a princess, will be presented in the first ever collaboration of its kind between Meow Wolf Omega Mart and Vegas City Opera.

I read the first sentence of this article and knew I had to find out what it was about. My first reaction was, “Wow, that’s a really weird fairy tale.” I then started thinking, a lot of what we think of as traditional fairy tales are really weird. A witch in a gingerbread house who wants to eat kids? Birds pecking out the eyes of an evil stepmother? I wonder what it is that attracts us to these stories. Regardless, this show sounds like a hilarious fairy tale and I would love to get to see it and find out more fully what it’s about. Furthermore, the collaboration between an immersive theatre company and an immersive experience company is a fascinating concept. They are two forms of entertainment that you wouldn’t immediately link to put together and I would love to know more about the interplay between the two companies.

Meow Wolf is already an extremely interactive exhibit that it's hard to imagine an opera being performed in it. Meow Wolf is known for its otherworldly aspect that really makes you think and observe the world around you. On the other hand an Opera connects a viewer to a world through music and performance but together the two ways of artistic expression use every single human sense to immerse the viewer in a new world. According to the article the opera will also travel throughout the space connecting the story to the environment. Over all viewers are connected to the story in every single way though possible. The other interesting part about this performance is that it's an opera. Through time opera has become a performance medium thought to be for old people. Doing an opera in Meow Wolf's Omega Mart connects the medium back to a younger generation and viewer base.

Meow Wolf is super cool! It is on my bucket list to go to one some day in my life. It reminds me of an interactive place I went to in Wisconsin called Wizard Quest. My dad hated it, but me and my brother thought it was so cool. Interactive exhibits and live performance art should definitely make a crossover more often. It is a good way to get people interested in the exhibit and to actually come see the performances.

I have been to the Denver Meow Wolf and the original one in Santa Fe, both of which are incredible to experience. I am super interested in the full concept of weird art entwined into a larger story about the space. Having individual pieces to look at, and having it weave into a story throughout the exhibit is super cool, not to mention all the mind-bending colors and shapes you have to look at. I saw a community production of The Love of Three Oranges, so I’m familiar with the story. What intrigues me the most is how they are going to use the overwhelming and beautiful nature of Meow Wolf as part of the storytelling. Non-traditional theatre spaces always add another challenge to work around, with Meow Wolf being no exception. I am excited to hear how the performance is received and what they did behind the scenes in order to pull it off.
