ALL PRAISE GENDER-NEUTRAL THEATRE (OR ANY MEDIA) AWARD CATEGORIES! Finally, an award shows that saw the societal change and made the appropriate shift in their system. I cannot wait for more places and associations to recognize their power and support our society's gender-non-conforming members. However, I worry that this will start a discussion about how this "takes away opportunities from (in this case) men," given the number of women winning. Men have long run this industry, and it is time we recognize everyone who makes it special (men included, of course.) Awards aside, it is interesting that women mostly won after switching to a genderless system. Initially, I misunderstood the article title, thinking they added a gender-non-regarding category anyone could be a part of. I believed women were winning, which made me think about masculinity and gender. Being non-binary and being feminine or androgynous typically go hand in hand. Still, I see people struggle with the concept of masculine non-binary folks, assumedly because they cannot fathom masculinity outside of man.
