Pedro Pascal Says Wearing ‘The Mandalorian’ Armor Is Like Going Blind

collider.com: The Mandalorian armor is the most distinctive one in the entire galaxy. With its uber-cool design and durability, the beskar armor can weather any kind of attack and gives its wearer the utmost protection and menacing look.

When designing costumes, how it will affect the actor is a huge factor that has to be considered. Not being able to see in your costume can be a hindrance to the actor and those on set. However, if that’s what needs to be done to achieve the desired effect, then so be it. From there, the costumers need to have a conversation with the director and the actor to decide what precautions need to be taken on set. I love how Pascal says he feels truly transformed into the character when he puts on the suit, despite how heavy it is and how hard it is to see. That is really the beauty of costuming. The feeling of putting on your costume at the first dress rehearsal really brings the show together. I think it’s amazing to see actors transform before your eyes once they are in costume and can really feel the full fantasy of their character.

Before I decided to go to school to be a designer I always thought actor’s crazy stories in interviews about uncomfortable costumes or wild stunts were cool, but now I just can’t imagine designing something that physically inhibits the actor's senses such as sight. But maybe because the mask was for a movie it was more feasible than my mind which is thinking of designing for the stage–where loss of sight would be pretty detrimental for a main character. I’m kind of surprised they weren’t able to find some material that the actor could see through that looked like a solid and opaque or some screen effect that could happen in after edits. But whatever needs to be to get the desired effect I suppose and it’s nice Pascal said the costume lets him get into character easily and fully because that’s always a goal of a customer, to make the wearer feel truly in character.

I love The Mandalorian and Pedro Pascal so of course I had to comment on this article. A few years ago I remember reading an article about Adam Driver and how his Kylo Ren mask didn’t allow him to see much either, but while he had it on with his costume he was able to better get into character and stuff. So, it seems as if the costumers for Star Wars series have a common theme of making masks hard to see out of for their characters. For the Mandalorian costume, I’m a little shocked that its hard to see out of. They have Pedro Pascal moving around so much that it doesn’t seem right that he can’t see out of it very well. Is the mask visibility the same for his stunt double too? That would be so difficult to work with. And the whole costume is heavy which must not be fun for that much moving around.
