FolkCostume&Embroidery: Overview of Boiko Costume, Ukraine
folkcostume.blogspot.com: Who are the Boikos? If you ask most Ukrainians, they will tell you that the Boiki live in the Carpathian mountains, east of the Lemki and west of the Hutsuls. This is true, as far as it goes. Boiko is a term which was originally applied to them by others, they tended to call themselves Rusyny, or Verkhovyntsi, [Highlanders].

The Boiko clothing is truly beautiful. I find specialty traditional ethnic based clothing to be absolutely fascinating and very illuminating into the culture of the people who wear it. I think that the Boiko people and further than that the Ukranian people in general embracing and still celebrating their culture and heritage is a beautiful thing especially when such a large imperial power is trying to deny their distinct ethnic and national identity to conquer and colonize them. The Ukrainian people have shown over and over again how strong, resilient, and exceptional they are in the face of a Russian force that serves as a terrifying physical and existential threat to the people and nation. The intricate and colorful embroidery that is so prevalent in the clothing is absolutely stunning and while it definitely shares similarities to other traditional slavic clothes it still remains absolutely distinct in its own way.
