Tom Cruise Might Be First Civilian to Spacewalk Outside the ISS
gizmodo.com: Tom Cruise is gearing up for the ultimate, gravity-defying stunt where he will be hanging off of a space station as it orbits the Earth at an altitude of 254 miles (408 kilometers).
Indeed, the Hollywood star is not only heading to space for his next film location, but may be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS).

Tom Cruise must have nine lives. He is always doing all his own stunts and has been in countless movies and films that are action packed. I enjoy Cruise’s screen presence and know that he must be a phenomenal actor to work with. I am so surprised that the industry is able to film on the ISS and on top of that have an actor Spacewalk. The amount of safety precautions and other equipment that must be installed is insane to think about. It’s even more insane that even though there are crews who have been training for this for months, there is still the possibility of Cruise coming aboard and being the 1st to spacewalk instead of an astronaut. I wonder if this film will progress and accomplish their goals to film and make Cruise the first civilian to spacewalk outside of the ISS.
What a title to be able to hold – the first civilian to spacewalk. Tom Cruise is a very, very lucky person to have to chance to do this. In the current day and age, very few people have had the opportunity to leave the Earth – ever. A quick google shows that as of July of last year, 574 people have been to space, and all of these people have been specially trained astronauts. And of course, as years pass and technology progresses, it may become more commonly available for civilians to take trips to a microgravity climate (though almost without a doubt will be incredibly cost prohibitive). In any case, if you told me that a movie was going to be filmed at the international space station and asked me to guess who was going to be starring in the film, Tom Cruise would be very high, if not first, on my list of names. He is well known for his stunts, and doing his own stunts, pushing the boundaries of what stunt actors usually do. To be completely honest, I am not even all that surprised that Tom Cruise will be filming a movie in space. Definitely moreso just jealous. I want to experience microgravity.
This is pretty insane that Universal and Tom Cruise are setting out to actually do this rather than just stage it on Earth. He is extremely brave for that but also pretty lucky. It is interesting to see how it seems like it is becoming slightly more accessible for civilians to get to space. At the moment, it is still the mega rich people that have any possibility of going, but it does make it seem like there is potential for this to become easier in the future. I can’t believe that they are going to make this trip with all the film gear though. The article doesn’t really talk about that, but I imagine quite a bit of gear is going to have to come up with them seeing how much it takes to put together a high budget film like this one. It’ll be interesting to see how NASA and SpaceX come up with something to get both Tom, crew, and the equipment up there for this short amount of time. I’m excited to see how this progresses.
