Patti LuPone Says She Resigned From Stage Actors’ Union

The New York Times: The much-honored stage actress Patti LuPone said on Monday that she resigned from the labor union Actors’ Equity months ago, revealing the news after her history of reprimanding cellphone-using audience members was invoked in a new controversy about the policing of electronic devices.

I had heard that she gave up her equity card, but no one had explained why and it seems like this article is reporting on two different incidents. She left the union after her show closed (and she wasn’t planning on returning any time soon) along with a frustration about how a dues cap was removed and she felt it was not effectively communicated. Obviously, high earning equity actors are not the majority of the unions body so I imagine that this is not an issue for the average member. She didn’t even announce it at the time. It’s incredibly unfortunate that the actor felt the need to comment on the audience members' use of a captioning device. This definitely speaks to how disconnected actors are many times from the day to day technical and administrative aspects of running a theater. There was no explanation of the “Figure it out” at the end of LuPone’s tweet, but I had initially thought it was directed at equity. Now it seems like it may be directed at the twitterverse.
