Paradise Square Producer Garth Drabinsky Sues Actors' Equity for Defamation

Playbill: Embattled Broadway producer Garth Drabinsky has sued theatrical union Actors' Equity Association for defamation. This move was in response to the union barring its members from working with the Paradise Square producer citing unpaid wages and allegations of unsafe work environments. The news, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, was confirmed by Playbill via AEA press representative David Levy.

Doing a little article comparison today; I wanted to see what Playbill said about the lawsuit in addition to Deadline. Similar info, regarding the case and Drabisky’s history. However, this one also focused on a point in the lawsuit where Drabisky claims that Actor’s Equity, essentially, called him racist and that it destroyed his “remarkable record”. Then the lawsuit went on to list some of the Black creators on productions he has worked on, as if any of their involvement somehow proves he’s not racist. Each person mentioned is a creator and an artist, there to tell a story and create a show. Not to prove an old man isn’t racist. And, it sounds like Drabisky said some things that were harmful to people in the room. Also, I just want to call attention to the fact that it was the actors and SMs ON THE SHOW that REQUESTED Drabisky be put on the Do Not Work list. That says a whole lot about the situation, and I just don’t see Drabisky winning this lawsuit.
