I learned about the Pittsburgh City Light Opera (CLO) during Susan’s class in the first week and was intrigued with all of the programs that they spearhead for the Pittsburgh theatre community. It is inspiring to see how other companies within the Pittsburgh area are also seeing the value in creating theatre opportunities that are accessible and available to all people. The New Horizons program taught performing arts to people with disabilities for over 25 years, and now with this new partnership they will be able to create a program that promotes theatre for people with disabilities. Through this program they will be able to learn about accessible options in the industry for people with disabilities as well as how to hone their craft as artists. This program alone is very inspiring and encouraging to the theatre community as it invokes positive change to our otherwise rigid structure of what theatre can and can’t be. By broadening our horizons and opening theatre up to everyone we are able to tell more stories and create spaces that are beneficial to the world around us. This program starts on November 12th and I can’t wait to see what positive change this program will evoke in the Pittsburgh theatre community.
