12 New Books* by Broadway Stars
New York Theater: Broadway performers Idina Menzel, Gideon Glick, Andy Mientus, Nancy Olson, directors Jack O’Brien and Sheldon Epps are all new authors — of memoirs, novels, a cookbook, a children’s book; not all strictly speaking theater books. And then there is the posthumously published diaries of Alan Rickman.

I am a pretty big Harry Potter fan, so when I saw Alan Rickman's diaries on the list, I knew I had to take a look at it. It’s funny, the foreword mentions that even though Alan Rickman was often known to be cast as villains (and notably dry ones such as Snape), he had a warm and giving personality totally contrary to that. You can feel how introspective and intelligent he was in these entries. I really enjoyed skimming through, and I may want to read this all the way through at some point. There’s a funny entry where he says, “To Vienna for costume fitting and I didn’t even argue. I should have.” I don’t even know if I have commentary for that, I just find that entertaining. It’s so interesting to hear his commentary of filming whatever he was working on at the time. His writing is also notably very blunt - his sentences are short and to the point - he is very sure of whatever he is saying, and I love that.
