I love The Lion King - both the film and the show. It’s absolutely wild that it’s hitting its silver anniversary and still going strong. It’s a tourist show, yes, and that’s a major part of its success. But I think it’s the show’s uniqueness and innovation that gives it that status of a Broadway “must-see” classic. I was able to visit the pop-up costume exhibit in New York City, where there were displays of original costumes and fabric swatches from Lion King’s costumes. Looking back at the photos, Scar’s tail is made of microwaved ultrasuede. A lot of the fabric is hand-painted and printed. On Nala’s fabric, there is texture printed on the inside, so when it flips up during choreography the texture is revealed. It’s little details like this that make me love theatre design so much. The new production photos are just stunning, and it’s so mesmerizing that the original designs are still so visceral today.
