Building a Director-Centered Community
HowlRound Theatre Commons: Welcome to a conversation with the team at Directors Gathering about why directors, and a healthy ecosystem for directors, matter. I am the founder and executive director of Directors Gathering, also known as (DG). We use the parentheses because it's like a circle. We believe deeply in circles and circles rising, as Paula Vogel likes to say.

It’s so important to see who people are as an artist and what they can contribute as a human being before getting into their work. Sometimes we get so lost in the work that it’s hard to remember that we also need to live and have full lives outside of theatre, and I can see that becoming especially encapsulating for a director, who needs to live and breathe the piece they’re directing, as they are setting the artistic vision. I also really like the idea of fostering community rather than competition. We are all in this for a shared love and passion, we shouldn’t be at each other’s throats but rather learning and growing from each other’s contributions and getting to know each other as artists and human beings. The Director’s Gathering seems to wonderfully exemplify these values and be doing some great work to provide a safe space for directors.
