'Hadestown,' coming to the Fox, features 3 St. Louisans in sizzling spin on myth

www.stltoday.com/entertainment: ‘Hadestown” isn’t the usual Broadway musical, which makes its breakout success all the more noteworthy. Inspired by Greek mythology and boasting a folk-inflected score with a hint of jazz, the show not only won eight Tony Awards, including one for best musical, but also has attracted the kind of buzz that made “Hamilton” and “Rent” must-see cultural phenomena. The touring production, whose cast includes several performers who hail from St. Louis, runs Oct. 11-23 at the Fox Theatre.

As someone from St. Louis who grew up watching shows come in on tour at the Fox it is exciting to see not only another show come into town but one filled with such local talent. Though St. Louis is not always considered a “theater city”, it is a city filled with arts culture and performance and through bringing more touring musicals through the city that creativity is emphasized. At first I was opposed to the idea of another retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice after shows such as Jasper in Deadland and Eurydice However unlike the trend of turning moves into musicals and not changing much after familiarizing myself more with Hadestown I understand one of the points that the author was making in this article that Hadestown is more than a traditional retelling of a greek myth and a cultural phenomena within itself. I am one day hoping to see this show and cultural phenomenon for myself.
