‘Othello is truly a dream role – no gammin!’ Jimi Bani takes on the role of a lifetime
Australian theatre | The Guardian: Actor Jimi Bani is deep into preparation for two very serious roles. One is the role of a lifetime. The other he has been preparing for his whole life. He is rehearsing for the role of Othello in Queensland Theatre’s upcoming production and he is in talks with his uncles as part of a years-long process to become the ninth chief of the Wagadagam tribe, on Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait.

Othello is in my top 3 favorite Shakespeare plays of all time and would honestly be a dream show to do as well, so I totally understand how it would be someone’s dream role. The new setting they developed, while still fitting the story’s throughline, fits surprisingly well. I also love when people of all different backgrounds and lifestyles take on such classics because they provide a new perspective on an age-old character. Another great example of this was when Paapa Essiedu played Hamlet like a starving young artist in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production by the same name. The fact that Jimi Bani is literally in line to be chief of the Wagadagam tribe is so interesting. I wonder what different takes he will bring to the role of Othello considering he also holds a position of high regard in society and is seen as an authority figure/leading man.
