First of all, I’m very impressed and proud of this accomplishment by these safety teams. I know how difficult managing Covid safety is for performances and I’m grateful to these people for the jobs that they do. I am however wondering about how sustainable this model is for COVID compliance, especially if it were to be scaled down for regional theaters and even smaller theaters than that. Even with the availability of free testing here in the US, COVID compliance is about so much more than that. There’s having to manage when actors and crew are allowed to have their masks off, enforcing mask and distancing policies for audience members, and dealing with Covid fatigue from the entire company, along with so many other complications. If we are constantly living in this state of emergency where a show could be stopped with one positive test, how do we continue to produce theatre as normal in this environment? I struggle being able to make art knowing that what we do is very high risk for the transmission of an airborne virus, and I don’t want to make art at the potential cost of people’s health and safety.
