Irving Berlin is, as this article states, a staple of American Musical theatre, and American Musical Film. Growing up I watched countless of his movies with my grandfather and have incredibly fond memories of all of them. I think the quote "Irving Berlin has no place in American music - he is American music,” particularly stuck out to me, as when I think of Irving Berlin I think of very classic Broadway music- a full bandstand or orchestra. However, this made me question if that style is due to him, rather than due to the time, which was an interesting thing to think about. I think potentially that is something to question in general, when thinking of eras of music, is it due to a person that the style is predominant? I also knew very little about Irving Berlin's background, so it was interesting to learn more about him. I knew he had produced a lot of music, but I had not realized he had lived so long, which also stuck out to me for some reason.
