Reviving the film industry in Michigan

wzzm13.com : In 2008, Michigan rolled out the country’s most lucrative tax incentives for filmmakers, offering a return of up to 42% of production costs. Many big-budget movies started shooting across the state, and the program seemed like a success. But less than seven years later, with a new governor in place, the program was dismantled. Efforts are now underway to revive the industry, but it's an uphill battle.

As a Michigan native, I would love it if there were a new, updated, film incentive in Michigan. I know that when the last incentive left there was an exodus of creative people, or like the people in this article, some who stayed to try and make things work. There has been such a drain on talented people as well as training opportunities in the film industry since Snyder revoked the previous incentive. Pair that with the pandemic in general and you see that the Michigan economy has so much room for growth. It is so upsetting to see other states profit from the amazing work and talent of Michigan natives while we have so many state representatives who are Republicans, and therefore hate anything that supports the arts or would make the Governor, a Democrat, look good. It is so frustrating to see so many people voting against things they know nothing about simply because of who is proposing it. I hope this new legislation passes and Michigan has a second chance for a film industry.
