I’m actually so excited for this. I’ve been following the new Marvel TV lineup for a while and watched the trailer for Hawkeye when it premiered, and everyone lost their shit a little bit at the clip of ‘Rogers: The Musical’, an in-universe musical about Captain America. I figured it was a throwaway gag, but to see that it’s actually going to be a big enough thing in the show to need an actual song written for it is hilarious and incredible. I also feel like it’s a great piece of world-building. The MCU has big storytelling problems, obviously, but the universe it’s created is so expansive that it can afford to spend time to show us things like an in-universe musical purely for the enjoyment of the fans, which I love. The process of creating however much of this show will be put on screen also seems like a really interesting one, because clearly there need to be some theatrical people involved - obviously the songwriters are featured here, but it appears on a stage, so there is most likely a set of theatrical designers and staff who were contracted to create a single song from a fictional musical, and I think that’s great. Here’s hoping it becomes a plot point and we can see more of it - I love seeing theatre, particularly the backstage workings, depicted on screen.
