This article did an amazing job of explaining how ethernet cables are being used to transport audio. Before reading this article, I did not truly understand what an audio ethernet protocol was or how it applied to theatrical venues. I can now see that being informed about what these protocols are is very important especially as a stage manager because it could explain why certain equipment isn’t working in a rehearsal and gives me a better understanding of what other members of my team are working on when loading in. As someone who is still learning what some sound equipment has to offer, I felt this article allowed me to fully comprehend what the difference is between proprietary and non-proprietary protocols and what the benefits and disadvantages of each are. This information can also be applied to the way other departments use ethernet cable, which I find to be very interesting.
