‘Slave Play’ Back On Track For Los Angeles Production

Deadline: Slave Play will arrive in Los Angeles after all. Playwright Jeremy O. Harris announced last night that his Tony-nominated comedy-drama will remain on the line-up at Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum in light of commitments made by the venue to expand opportunities there for women, trans and non-binary artists.

This is what happens when people in power use it for good purposes! I remember reading this article 2 weeks ago and I’m excited that this move led to real change instead of just some bad PR for a month. Theatre is all about telling the stories of people, and those stories must be both diversely told and diversely written to both connect with multiple audiences and be authentic to the medium. Without pieces written by non-male and non-white people, the theatre leaves out so many people who otherwise would be so excited to engage in our art. This news shows the theatre industry that there are positions of power to demand more equity and diversity in the theatrical seasons. Prominent playwright Jeremy O. Harris used his power to approve or deny productions of his show in a massive way here. Maybe the theatre just really wanted this show and was willing to edit their season, maybe they wanted the good PR and attention, or they could have seriously not realized what they had done and been genuinely remorseful. We the public will never know, but clearly this play has enough power to leverage these long overdue commitments.
