Schiff, Padilla and 118 Members of Congress Call for Improved Wages and Working Conditions for Behind-the-Scenes Entertainment Workers
IATSE: Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), along with 118 Senators and Members of the House sent a letter to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers urging the association to negotiate collaboratively and in good faith with Hollywood craft workers advocating for improved wages and working conditions on movie and television sets.

It is encouraging that the industry is getting specifically targeted with legislative attention in support of workers, although it is disappointing (though not surprising) that all the signatories on this letter are Democrats (or Independents who caucus with Democrats, as the case may be). I would be skeptical that this would have much of a real effect on employers, except that Hollywood is so tied to California, and of the parts of the industry that are not based in California, a significant chunk resides in New York, which are states solidly in the legislative hands of Democrats, and the attention of people like Rep. Adam Schiff, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein includes a legitimate threat of legislative action on the state level, and it might actually motivate some cooperation for fear of bringing down regulatory consequences from above. There was another headline that some progress was being made in negotiations, so maybe that threat had an effect.
