Machining Fundamentals: Introduction to Toolpaths
Fusion 360 Blog: We created the Machining Fundamentals series to help you brush up on your CAM knowledge, whether you work in a machine shop or are just getting started. In-house machinists at our Birmingham Technology Center host each episode and provide a detailed overview of a tool/process. In the last edition, we covered post processors. Here we have an introduction to toolpaths, where you’ll get an in-depth look at various toolpath types, from 2D to 5-axis, and how you can program them with Fusion 360.

Toolpathing is one of those necessary evils that can really make or break your night working at the machine. I have a very basic understanding of toolpathing and mainly from a 2 dimensional perspective. I know that there are more advanced machines that go into 3 dimensional toolpaths and 5 axis machines that can take everything one step further. Recently, I was completing a number of 2D toolpaths, or contour cuts, for a show and really had a great deal of success most of the time. The only time the toolpath fought back was when the .dwg file I was working from had some lines that either did not connect or were stacked on top of each other. This was all done in MasterCAM, I have never used Fusion360 and did not even know that it had toolpathing capabilities. It looks like a more user friendly application and I would love to try it out at school to see if it can produce files that the CNC Router can read from.
