Hippotizer Amba drives visuals for Spring Awakening at Central School of Speech & Drama

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I have seen so many bland productions of “Spring Awakening” that feature a bland wooden aesthetic. I am glad to see that the students at Royal London sought out to do the production in a new and fresh way. Personally, I have been dying to get my hands on Green Hippo. So, I found this rather compelling, and was excited to see that the students had staff support. On the other hand, I did further research on the production. I saw production images and I do not think the integration is nearly as innovative as the article makes it sound. The projections are just kind of plastered in black and white at the top of the stage, acting as a border. I think with the amount of resource the production had they could have more seamlessly integrated the projections. I believe this root back to the designer’s dismissive statement saying that because this was the school’s first show back they wanted to integrate as much visual grandeur as possible. I personally despise this mindset. It is what leads many video media designers to struggle with others viewing their work as an unnecessary part of production that lacks meaning. Projection is not needed in every situation, but in some it heavily enhances the production and is rooted in strong meaning.
