It piqued my interest that Sandy Powell designed the costumes for “The Favourite” and “Carol,” because I really enjoyed the costumes in both films. Powell’s textile choices are one of my favorite elements of her design style. The costumes in “Carol” use beautiful rich-looking wools and furs, and the characters look polished without looking too “perfect”. In “The Favourite,” she used a lot of slightly shiny/metallic fabrics and trims, which make the pieces feel somewhat contemporary without being distracting. Later in this article I appreciated the specification of how many female directors have films at the festival, and while directing isn’t the only important field to have women in, nor is 63 out of 157 the ideal balance, the author could have omitted this detail but they chose to keep it. The lineup for the festival looks exciting and I can’t wait to see “The French Dispatch” and “Spencer” for myself when they are released to theaters.
I am thrilled that Sandy Powell is receiving the variety honor at the savannah film fest because she absolutely deserves it! I’ve been following Sandy Powells work for quite some time now and she is by far one of my favorite costume designers in the film industry. I was first introduced to her work in the film “Gangs of New York” and already then I was stunned by her use of material culture to recreate garments that I feel accurately depicted 1860s New York. Of course there where some historical accuracy's, but for the most part I thought the overall color pallet, fabric, and cut of the garments she used was great. Her costuming in “The Favorite” was also incredible and I really like how the kept the odd styles of the time and blended them with a more modern color pallet. Overall, I think Sandy Powell is an incredible costume designer and she deserves all the credit she receives for her work. I have been meaning to see more of her films such as “Carol” and “The Irishmen”, especially because I think its really cool when costume designers are able to master the looks of various eras throughout history.
